The 2005 Great Lakes Regional is just around the corner and all signs point to one of the finest regionals in recent memory. 1600 students will compete in roughly 4600 events. Please make certain all your families are aware that there are a very limited number of rooms available at the Hyatt Regency. You can phone the Hyatt directly at 313-593-1234. Mention the AGM for our reduced rate at this first class hotel. Keep in mind that the more rooms booked by our organization, the better the chances are that we can maintain current entry fees. It is also a great stress reliever for the contestant and family.
Several changes are being implemented at this regional including a new Saturday evening awards ceremony for all test list trophies. The dress code will be in place during this award ceremony and name badges will be required. The test list awards will take place immediately preceeding the Battle of the Bands. Due to the new Saturday evening awards there will be no carnival this year. Acting on requests and suggestions from the membership, the souvenir program has been given a new format which we hope will be much more user friendly.
Saturday evening will be jammed packed with activities including Warner Brothers workshops, test list awards and battle of the bands. Don't miss the Teacher Hospitality Party open to all studio directors, AGM instructors, adjudicators and others interested in networking with musical movers and shakers from around the music scene.
To present an event of this magnitude, we require an immense amount of assistance. We need help in many areas to assure a sucessful competition. We are in particular need of people willing to act as door guards and room monitors. We will train anyone over fourteen years of age who are willing to give up as few as three hours during the weekend. Please ask your students, parents and any siblings that may be attending the competition if they would care to help us out. If you have some volunteers for us, please...
Due to numerous requests, the AGM is bringing back one of the most popular programs of the past with the reappearance of the Student Council. The Guild realizes that the future of our organization is now and we want the students of today to have an impact on the direction we take. Each studio will be asked to select a representative and an alternate to the council and they will be expected to attend meetings at regional and National Competitions. There will be an organizational meeting at this year's Great Lakes Regional and the council will begin full activities at the National in July. For more information, please refer to the current issue of the AGM NEWS, contact Theresa White at theresa.white@americanguild.org, or get an application with a simple...
The board decided at its mid year meeting in October to revamp the battle of the bands competition. Battle of the bands shall consist of two divisions, average age 15 and under, and 16 and above. A time limit of 20 minutes will be strictly enforced. A qualifying round will be held at each regional, the National will have a qualifying round and a final round. The top two bands from each division will advance to the final round, which will be held at the National contest each summer. Each qualifying round will be limited to the first six bands entered. The first place winner in the Battle of the Bands Finals will receive a cash award of $200.00 minimum. To view the official proposal in its entirety, please...
The Guild is excited and proud to announce two workshops presented in cooperation with Warner Brothers Publications at this year's Regional. The clinics, "Why All MIDI Music Is Not Created Equal" and "The WB Popular Piano Library" will be held in Regency G of the Hyatt on Saturday April 23 and are open to all Detroit area teachers, AGM members and advanced piano/keyboard students. April 22-24, 2005 Great Lakes Regional
From time to time there seems to be confusion surrounding the various divisions and categories offered at Guild events. We are going to take a monthly in depth look at many of the differences in what is offered at AGM competitions. The first misunderstanding is the difference between regional and National competitions. A common misconception is that only students that have entered a regional competition may enter a National. This is simply not true. Although there are some divisions- such as NAIC and the Concerto divisions- that have qualifying rounds at regionals and a final round at the National, member studios may send any of their students to the National. All your favorites are at both regionals and the National including Test List, Pop, Age Achievement and Length of Study to name but a few. To view a list of all events offered at both
regionals and the National, please...
The 104th AGM National Convention and Competition is scheduled to be held July 27-30, 2005 and the host hotel will be the famous Netherland Hilton Hotel in Cincinnati, OH. Over the next several months we will be looking at various attractions in and around the Cincinnati area. There are many things to see and do in the vicinity of the hotel complex. The hotel itself is in the world renown Carew Tower which also contains three other hotels , a food court and a first class shopping mall.
Watch for special pages on the American Guild of Music web site chronicling things to see and do as we visit the 'Queen City". This special section of the web site will appear on April 15.
Composition Clinic!
The Board of Directors recently approved in principle the creation of a new Composition clinic and competition for the National contest. This category will be comprised of three levels and will feature a clinic at each level to coincide with the composition competition itself. All pieces will be written and performed on the instrument of the students choice with adjudication based on the composition and not the performance. This year we will begin with the first year clinic. Anyone wishing to submit a composition for consideration must also enter the clinic itself, with daily lectures during the run of the National. For further information, please see the current issue of the AGM NEWS or contact Daren Peplinski at daren.peplinski@americanguild.org.
